// Bradford to join Flacco and Ryan? No. 2 Bellarmine girls fall to Gonzaga Prep; Holiday hoops schedule

Pro Football:

Sam Bradford, the first pick in this year's NFL draft, hasn't been slowly nurtured by the St. Louis Rams. Instead, the Rams threw Bradford into the fire on day one—and he's rewarded them by placing the team in playoff contention. If the Rams beat Seattle on Sunday, Bradford will join Atlanta's Matt Ryan and Baltimore's Joe Flacco as the third rookie quarterback in NFL history to start all 16 games and get to the playoffs, according to Stats Inc. The Rams could become the seventh team to make the playoffs while starting a rookie at quarterback for more than 10 games; five of the previous six have come since 2004.

The Seahawks are planning to start Charlie Whitehurst against the Rams. Pete Carroll said the Seahawks will plan on Whitehurst being their starter Sunday night. But he wasn't ready to rule out Matt Hasselbeck after he left Sunday's 38-15 loss to Tampa Bay after running for a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Hasselbeck suffered a strain to his lower back/hip/gluteal area that did not allow him to return.

Hasselbeck underwent an MRI and additional tests Monday morning and the results were positive enough that Carroll remained somewhat optimistic.

"It's something (that) it may be manageable. It may be," Carroll said. "The MRI results were not such where he doesn't have a chance. They were very hopeful that he has an opportunity to get back, but we won't know for days. So it's kind of a difficult situation for us because we don't know and we're not sure what is going to happen until we find out the news probably by Saturday, or it may go all the way to game time."

After Sunday's loss, Hasselbeck said the injury first popped up in Week 3 against San Diego and has been a slight bother a few other times during the season, but nothing like Sunday. Hasselbeck went to the ground after scoring and walked off the field.

If he can't go, Whitehurst would be making his second career start, with Seattle going for its first division title since 2007.

"I want to make sure as we proceed through the week and know what we're doing," Carroll said. "If Matt can play a factor in that, we'll figure it out when the time comes."

Offensive tackle Russell Okung also aggravated a left ankle injury Sunday, but did not miss a play. Carroll did not indicate whether Okung will miss any time. Wide receiver Brandon Stokley also suffered a concussion, but the Seahawks won't know about his availability until later in the week.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:

Zach Banner, a junior lineman from Lakes High School was named to the first team All USA squad by USA Today.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL:

Donald Gaddy scored 17 points for Bellarmine Prep in its 53-48 loss to Sacred Heart (CA) in the first round of the Slalom Slam tournament at Seattle Prep last night.

The Bellarmine girls, who have been ranked as high as No.2 in the state by the News Tribune and Seattle Times, fell to Gonzaga Prep, 50-43, last night at Jesuit High School in Portland. The Lions cut a 13-point deficit to 45-43 with just two minutes remaining. There is no shot clock in Oregon high-school basketball, so the Lions had little choice but to foul Gonzaga, which was able to hits its free throws down the stretch. The Lions will play Seattle Prep tonight.

Area basketball teams are scattered around at various holiday tournaments.
