The Northwest Conference women’s basketball game of the year to this point will take place this week (Jan. 30), when the University of Puget Sound hosts conference leader George Fox at 6 p.m. at Memorial FieldHouse.
The Loggers, at 7-1, trail the Bruins, 8-0, by one game in conference standings. The Loggers only conference loss is to the Bruins, that a 65-62 overtime game on Jan. 2 at George Fox.
Setting up a first-place showdown was a Logger victory last week against Lewis & Clark. Puget Sound won handily, 74-49, in Portland against the Pioneers, who fell to 6-2 for the season and into third place.
The Loggers used an 8-0 run to go up by seven points, 13-6, midway through the first half. Puget Sound pushed the lead into double-digits with 8:43 left to go when freshman Kelsey McKinnis hit a three-pointer to put the maroon and white up, 20-8. The lead hit 20 points with 5:15 left to go in the opening period on a jumper by Claire Ely and the Loggers continued to cruise as they headed into halftime up, 36-18.
The Loggers were led by 23 points from Ely, who is now at 984 points in her career. Jocelyn Riordan put up 20 in the win while McKinnis added 14 points. Puget Sound forced 22 turnovers on the night while committing just nine of their own.
Loggers’ Jeremic leads swimmers
Alexsander Jeremic was the top swimmer for the Loggers as they resumed the 2009-10 season. He helped Puget Sound to two firstplace relay finishes at the Cal Lutheran Relay Invite and won both the 200 free (1:47.99) and the 100 fly (53.27) in a dual meet against Pacific.
