The Greater Puget Sound Youth Football League held its championships for the fourth- to eighth-grade teams at Steilacoom High School on Nov. 10, with the Bellarmine Lions Youth Football Club emerging with three wins and the Tacoma Panthers taking two victories. The Panthers emerged with a 34-0 win over the East Side Angels in the fourth-grade game, as quarterback Larry Glover hit Julien Simon for a 59-yard touchdown in the second quarter and connected with Jousha Henry from seven yards out in the third quarter. The Panthers held the Angels to under 40 total yards in the game and just one first down, as they completed a perfect 11-0 season.
The Lions beat the Panthers 31-20 in the fifth-grade game, as running back Kelee Ringo had 10 carries for 180 yards and four touchdowns, while adding a 56-yard touchdown catch. The Lions also finished 11-0 on the year.
The Panthers got revenge by claiming a 49-34 win over the Lions in the sixth-grade matchup of two undefeated squads. Panthers quarterback Kaleb Arthur scored on an 18-yard run to make it 14-14 shortly before halftime, and running back Jasiah Marcus gave the Panthers a 21-14 lead as time expired in the first half with a 93-yard touchdown run. The Panthers put up 437 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Lions quarterback Michael Hearon, meanwhile, was 8-for-18 for 148 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while adding 15 carries for 81 yards and three touchdowns in the losing effort.
The seventh grade Lions topped the Panthers 26-7 later to finish 12-0 on the season, as they are on a 30-game winning streak in the league dating through multiple seasons. Malik Putney’s three first-half touchdown runs gave the Lions a 20-0 lead at the half, as they captured their third straight league title.
The Lions then beat the East Side Angels 24-19 in the eighth grade game, as quarterback Christian Moore was 9-for-16 for 252 yards and three touchdowns. Lawrence Lovelace, Jr. hauled in touchdown passes of 60 and 63 yards for the Lions, while fellow wideout Kyle Casey caught an 81-yard touchdown from Moore. Angels running back Cale Lindsey had 25 carries for 131 yards and three touchdowns in the losing effort. Quarterback K.D. Humphrey led the team downfield for a potential game-winning touchdown, but was sacked by the Lions’ Isaiah Conner to end the game.
