2012 All-City Soccer Team
// Imposing Defenders, Goal-Scorers Highlight Top Talent
The local soccer talent on the pitch was astounding once again this year, as several squads used experienced rosters to make deep postseason runs. We cap our postseason look back with the 2012 Tacoma Weekly All-City Soccer Team, highlighting 20 of the city’s best players at their various positions.
What better way to start then looking at the last line of defense, goalkeeper, where two standouts put brilliant finishes to their high school careers. Bellarmine’s Eric Bottjer was dominant again, notching 11 shutouts and recording several outstanding saves to preserve precious leads for the Lions. Wilson senior Mason Portalski was similarly impressive, helping the Rams allow just nine goals in league play while also putting up five shutouts.
Bellarmine Prep senior Michael Dick was once again one of the more imposing defenders in the city this year, helping erase attacks with clearing kicks and headers and possessing the speed to catch up to opposing attackers. Foss’ sweeper Michael DeRouen was a sturdy last defender for the Falcons, as well, as the senior showed good ball handling skilled while also having the durability to play at forward when needed. Similarly, Life Christian senior Kenny Crowder showed the ability to play solid defense but could also lead the offensive attack, becoming a solid ball-controller for the Eagles. Wilson senior defender Fletcher Riches showed skill in defending one-on-ones, possessed the height to win headers and also was good on the attack, chipping in with four goals and six assists. Stadium’s Bryce Ikeda burst onto the scene this year, as the freshman was a skilled defender but also was able to push forward, using his long throw-ins to help the Tigers’ offense. Bellarmine’s Adam Smith provided the ability to shut down the opponent’s top threat, as the always-hustling defender locked onto attackers and limited their opportunities.
The midfielders are headlined by Stadium junior Jacob Beardemphl, who guided the Tigers’ offense and controlled the ball skillfully, leading to nine goals and a team-high 13 assists. Junior teammate Max Harvey was a flashy ball-handler for the Tigers, constantly tricking defenders while putting up six goals and eight assists for Stadium. Wilson senior Alex Eiffert made things happen for the Rams, scoring eight goals while dishing out 11 assists in showing great consistency throughout the year. Tacoma Baptist’s Trevor Talen was a difference-maker with great vision, leading the Crusaders with 26 assists while also chipping in with 15 goals. Bellarmine senior midfielder Will Holtz, a player coach Joe Waters described as rarely making a mistake, displayed good defensive ability and was an all-out hard worker. Lincoln’s Francis Mukoiko rounds out the midfielders, as the senior possessed goal-scoring ability and speed to outrace defenders.
Wilson’s Chris Peterson leads the list of talented forwards, as the senior used his size to control the ball and run the Rams’ offense, scoring 20 goals and adding 20 assists. Bellarmine senior Kurtis Pederson hustled all around the field for the Lions, helping the defensive effort while also running the offensive attack, scoring 14 goals and adding 15 assists. Teammate Cooper Doxon provided the Lions with height, strength and scoring ability up front – tallying 12 goals and eight assists – along with the ability to play defense when called upon. Michael Rector completed the Lions’ devastating three-headed attack, using his blazing speed to outrace defenders and score 15 goals while adding nine assists. Tacoma Baptist’s Jake Zimmer was the star of the show for the Crusaders, as the senior rarely missed a scoring chance, tallying an astounding 40 goals while also adding 13 assists. Mount Tahoma’s Brian Wambaa earned a nod after creating most of the scoring chances this year for the Thunderbirds, drawing five penalty kicks and tallying three goals and three assists.
