Wilson boys beat Foss at Buzzer

// Wilson beats Foss with late heroics to sit in first in Narrows 3A

Riding the momentum from their big win at Lincoln on Jan. 11 and primed to stretch out their lead in the Narrows 3A, the Foss Falcons ran into a determined young Wilson team on Jan. 13 at the Dalesky-Black Gym. The Rams survived the loss of starting point guard Phoenix Waters to fouls with 2:31 left in the game, and Jaiden Martin's running five-footer off of a full-court pass from Kevin Johnson gave the Rams a 54-52 win to vault Wilson into first place at 3-0 in league play.

"Jaiden made a great catch and finish on the pass from Kevin. It was a great win for us," said Wilson head coach Dave Alwert.

Another large factor in the game was the play of talented freshman Ivy Smith, who would contribute nine big points on the night.

"The smallest guy on the court with the biggest heart, Ivy was just super tonight, and give Kevin credit for his great pass," Alwert added.

Another youngster, sophomore Andraell Fountain, played a large part as well.

"He's done a great job defensively and on the boards too," said Alwert.

With the lead changing hands eight times in the game, the young Rams managed to keep the Falcons at arms length for the duration of the fourth quarter. Trailing 48-46 with just over two minutes to go, Smith drained a long three to give Wilson the lead as the Rams faithful went wild.

After Marcus Chambers and Dezmyn Trent tied the game by each sinking two free throws, Johnson did his impersonation of Tom Brady for the winner, just over the outstretched hands of Trent – who led all scorers with 20 points.

"I guess my quarterback training at a younger age came in handy tonight," said Johnson.

Martin, who has been a rock and a steadying influence for Wilson all season, reflected on the win.

"It was a battle all night for us against a good Foss team. It was a great pass from Kevin for my winning hoop."

"I wasn't expecting all these minutes tonight, but I'm glad I got them," said Fountain. Just another average Friday night in the Narrows League.
