LOCAL TENNIS PLAYERS ADVANCE TO DISTRICTS
Mount Tahoma’s Janrick Peros won the singles tournament at the Narrows 3A tennis tournament on Oct. 26 at Tumwater High School, highlighting a solid day for local players.
Peros topped Wilson’s Davin Hanton 6-4, 6-2 in the finals after topping Foss’ Ryan Phillips 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals. Hanton had beaten North Thurston’s Tanner Holmes 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals, and earned the second seed to the district tournament. Phillips was topped by Holmes 6-1, 6-2 in the consolation finals to earn the fourth seed to districts. In 3A doubles, Wilson’s Ernie Enkhanzhaya and Cooper Eddy advanced to the semifinals, but settled for the fourth seed to districts after falling in the consolation finals.
At the 4A tournament, Stadium sophomore Callan Peterson claimed the second seed to districts after topping Bellarmine Prep’s Henry Wurst 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals and falling to Olympia’s Jamie Bautista 6-0, 6-0 in the finals. Wurst went on to take the fourth seed to districts after falling in the consolation finals.
In 4A doubles, Bellarmine Prep’s Elliot Gardner and Chris Wood advanced to the finals with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Gig Harbor’s Drew Lawson and Mason Jarvis. They fell 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to Olympia’s Kyle Wooten and Will Berghoff in the finals, but will carry the second seed to the district tournament.
The 4A district tournament was scheduled to begin on Nov. 1 at 8:30 a.m. at the Capital City Tennis Club in Olympia, and will run through Nov. 2. The 3A districts take place at Sprinker Rec Center, beginning on Nov. 1 at 8:30 a.m. and continuing on Nov. 2 at 10 a.m.
WILSON SECOND, FOSS THIRD AT NARROWS 3A MEET
Foss won six of 12 events to take third place, while Wilson tallied 233 points as a team to place second at the Narrows 3A swim meet on Oct. 25, at Mount Tahoma High School.
As always, seniors Emma Chard and Sarah Sachs stole the show for the Falcons. Chard cruised to a victory in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.97, and added a victory with another state time in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sachs added a state-qualifying swim of 1:01.76 in winning the 100-yard backstroke, and earlier put up a district time in winning the 200-yard freestyle. Senior Yana Kuloff took third in the 100-yard butterfly, junior Nicole Ripley took third in the 500-yard freestyle and the Falcons won the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays.
Wilson was led by sophomore Madeleine Dodge, who won the 500-yard freestyle in a district time of 5:40.26, and added a district time in taking second in the 200-yard freestyle. Sophomore Karli Stevenson and junior Rachel Duke also swam two district times apiece. Stevenson took third in the 200-yard individual medley and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly, and Duke took fourth in the 100-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Senior Hailey Viehmann won the diving competition with a score of 357.30, and freshmen Lilly Tran and Kelly Tran added a couple of district times apiece for the Rams.
The 3A district swim and dive meet takes place at Hazen High School, with prelims on Nov. 8 at 4:30 p.m. and finals on Nov. 9 at 5 p.m.
STADIUM TAKES SECOND AT LEAGUE SWIM MEET
Led by their young swimmers, Stadium scored 265 points at the Narrows 4A swim meet on Oct. 25, at Mount Tahoma High School to take second place as a team.
Freshman Kaycee Simpson was one of the Tigers’ standouts, placing second in the 200-yard individual medley and third in the 100-yard butterfly – just missing state times in both. Fellow freshmen Cameron Thurston and Kailey Allen added district-qualifying swims, placing third in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles, respectively. Sophomore Mellanie Muller swam district times in taking fourth in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, and classmate Jensine Rasmussen placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke. Tigers senior Hanna Fransman placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and freshman Jordana Sevigny took third in the diving competition.
The 4A district swim meet was scheduled to take place at Curtis High School from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. The diving competition takes place on Oct. 31 at 4 p.m., while the swimming prelims are on Nov. 1 at 4:30 p.m. and finals on Nov. 2 at 4:30 p.m.
NARROWS 3A CROSS COUNTRY
The Wilson boys and girls cross country teams each placed in the top four at the Narrows 3A cross country meet on Oct. 23 at Fort Steilacoom Park to advance to districts as a team.
Rams senior Austin Lawrence set a personal best time of 17:34.96 to place 10th in the boys meet, while sophomores Alex Gayvoronski and Andrew Bone placed 13th and 16th, respectively.
Lincoln junior Mecca Amen took eighth place in a time of 17:26.99, while senior teammates Zachary Bennett and Peter Marriott placed 18th and 19th to also advance to the district meet.
Freshman Lucia Schmidt-Steffen was the Rams’ top girl finisher, placing tenth in 21:45.29. Junior Hunter Freuhling-Thomas was 13th and senior Rachel Russell placed 16th for Wilson.
Foss senior Jaysha Wharton placed 18th, while Mount Tahoma sophomore Annika Thach took 19th to qualify for districts as well.
The Westside Classic district cross country meet was scheduled to take place on Nov. 2 at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood, with the 3A boys running at 1:10 p.m. and the 3A girls at 2:10 p.m.
