Wilson overcame a six-point deficit early in the fourth quarter, and held off O’Dea late for a 60-57 win in their 3A boys opener Thursday morning at the Tacoma Dome.
The Rams showed no ill effects of the 9 a.m. tipoff, sinking seven of their first 10 shots and taking a 13-8 lead on Alphonso Anderson’s three-point play midway through the first quarter. O’Dea forward Jacob Lampkin – standing at 6-foot-9 – picked up his third foul midway through the second quarter and was forced to sit, opening up things in the middle. The Rams were 12-for-20 from the field in the first half, but led just 28-25 at the break.
The Irish’s Quin Barnard began to heat up late in the third quarter, giving O’Dea its first lead since the early stages, at 36-35, with a three-pointer with 1:12 left in the period. Barnard nailed back-to-back threes early in the fourth to make it 46-40 with 6:37 to go in the game. But the Rams stormed back, as Anderson capped a 10-1 run in just over two minutes with a turnaround jumper to make it 50-47.
Lampkin – who finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds – helped O’Dea close within 56-55 with 50 seconds to play, but Anderson followed with a beautiful pass under the hoop to David Jenkins, who finished with a layup. Ivy Smith, Jr. sank two free throws with a second remaining, and Jamie Orme’s desperation three-pointer for the Irish sailed over the backboard.
Anderson led Wilson with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Smith, Jr. had 16 points and eight assists and Jenkins and Jamal Welch added eight points apiece.
Wilson awaits the winner between Eastside Catholic and University in the semifinals on Friday at 3:45 p.m.
