Emerald Ridge charged back from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but Stadium held on for a 45-44 win over the Jaguars in their 4A district playoff opener at home on Thursday night.
The Tigers led 31-19 early in the fourth quarter, but the Jaguars’ Marcus Harris – who scored a game-high 22 points – tallied 12 points in the fourth quarter to help Emerald Ridge charge back. His driving jumper with 33 seconds left pulled the Jaguars within 41-39, but Bobby Moorehead responded with two free throws at the other end. Harris added a rebound and put-back with six seconds remaining, then Mark Galanesi sealed the win for the Tigers by sinking a pair of free throws.
Stadium was held scoreless for nearly five minutes to open the game, as Moorehead – who finished tied for a team-high with 12 points – got them on the board with a driving layup with 3:03 left in the first quarter. Ben Cottrill added five points in the first quarter, and Blake Budzisz gave the Tigers and 18-13 lead with a three-pointer late in the second quarter. The Tigers created some space in the third quarter, as Emerald Ridge missed their first 10 shots in the quarter, and Cottrill’s three-pointer with 3:55 remaining gave Stadium a 28-17 lead. But they weren’t able to take full advantage of the offensive struggles of the Jaguars, who finished just 13-for-44 from the field.
Lucious Brown finished with 12 points for the Tigers, while Malik Mayeux added six points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Raeshon Scales scored 11 points for the Jaguars.
Stadium next takes on Curtis – 58-53 winners over Tahoma – in the district quarterfinals at Auburn High School on Saturday at 2:45 p.m.
