Lucious Brown scored a game-tying turnaround jumper in the final seconds to force overtime, and Bobby Moorehead led Stadium in the extra period for a 39-37 win over Curtis in the 4A district playoffs at Auburn High School on Saturday afternoon.
Tory Causey – who scored all of his game-high 14 points after halftime – nailed his third three-pointer of the fourth quarter with 1:48 remaining to give Curtis a 33-31 lead. After Brown’s late bucket forced overtime, Causey gave the Vikings a 37-33 lead with 2:12 remaining by hitting two of three free throws. But Moorehead nailed a clutch three-pointer a minute later, and snagged a nice pass from Brown for the game-winning layup with 33 seconds remaining.
Aushanti Potts-Woods scored six of his 11 points in the first quarter for Curtis, but Stadium took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter on a tip-in by former Viking Malik Mayeux at the buzzer. Mayeux finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and three steals for the Tigers. Stadium then held Curtis scoreless for over seven minutes in the second quarter, taking a 17-9 lead on Mayeux’s layup with 1:49 until halftime. Potts-Woods put up the Vikings’ only point in the period with a late free throw.
The Tigers struggled early in the third quarter – committing six turnover in the first three minutes – but Brown scored seven points in the quarter to help Stadium take a 26-20 lead into the final period.
With the win, the Tigers advanced to the district semifinals, where they will face Todd Beamer at Auburn High School on Thursday night at 6 p.m. No matter the results the rest of the tournament, the Tigers have assured themselves a spot in the state regionals. Curtis will play in a loser-out contest against Auburn at Auburn High School on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
