Lady Rams roll, inch closer to league title

Tia Briggs scored a game-high 24 points and Justina Laney threw in 17 points of her own as the Wilson Lady Rams rolled to a easy 72-26 win over the Timberline Blazers at the Harry Byrd Gym on Friday night.

With this core group of seniors, who have been together for the last four years and have yet to reach the Tacoma Dome for the state playoffs, this remains the make-or-break season and career-ending finish that has eluded them.

“This has really haunted us the last four years, and nothing less than a trip to the Dome will satisfy us,” said Briggs, who dominated the game in the paint from start to finish. “We have to get there this year.”

After a sluggish first quarter, the Lady Rams took control in the second quarter as Briggs and Laney combined for 13 points and Wilson took a 22-point lead into the locker room at halftime. The amazing thing was that leading scorer Bethany Montgomery went scoreless for the half, going 0-for-4 from beyond the arc. But with Briggs’s 24 points, Laney’s 17 and Carsen Stanley’s 10 points, it was no matter.

Three games remain in the season for the Lady Rams, and barring any let down, they hope to finish the season with another perfect league record. After the heartbreaking end to the postseason last year, they hope much more is in the offing after that.
