Lincoln had the height advantage, but it was Sunnyside's smooth-shooting guards that took over to lead the Grizzlies to a 67-54 win over the Lady Abes on Friday afternoon at the Tacoma Dome. The loss brings Lincoln's magical season - in which they advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 2006 - to an end.
Breneya Johnson's putback tied it 9-9 three minutes into the game, but Sunnyside took the lead for good with a 13-3 run capped by a jumper by Natalia Bazan at the end of the first quarter.
Bazan was 8-for-10 from the field, scoring 18 points, while Emilee Maldonado tallied a team-high 19 points for Sunnyside.
Tamia Braggs controlled the interior for Lincoln, finishing with 25 points and eight rebounds, while Johnson finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Maldonado put Sunnyside up 41-28 with a three-pointer early in the third quarter, but Lincoln wouldn't go away. The Abes clawed to within 44-38 on a pair of free throws by Braggs late in the third, but Maldonado promptly answered with a three at the other end. The Grizzlies finished 7-for-15 from beyond the arc, and Lincoln committed 21 turnovers that led to 16 points for Sunnyside.
