For the second straight season, Foss head coach Mike Cocke’ got the better of his older brother - Stadium head coach Doug Cocke' - as the Falcons outlasted the Tigers 47-43 at home in an early nonleague basketball test tonight.
The Falcons were led by senior guard Ar’Mond Davis, who scored a team-high 14 points, while junior Sam Dabalos McMahon was 5-for-7 from the field and tallied 12 points for Foss.
Davis gave the Falcons their first lead at 9-7 with a layup late in the first quarter, and later drained a three-pointer – his only trey of the night – to extend it to 17-11 early in the second quarter.
But Stadium clawed back to within 23-21 at the break, as forwards Malik Mayeaux and Lucious Brown had four points each during the stretch. Mayeaux finished with a team-high 16 points for Stadium, going 10-for-11 from the free-throw line, while Brown finished 6-for-9 from the field and tallied 15 points. The duo also finished with nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
Mayeaux regained a 29-27 lead for the Tigers midway through the third with two free throws, but McMahon answered with a three-pointer, setting of a long stretch of lead changes. Davis’ back-to-back steals midway through the fourth quarter stole momentum for good for Foss, as he fed McMahon for a layup and followed with a breakaway layup to make it 43-37 with 3:02 left. The Falcons maintained at least a four-point lead the rest of the way.
