With two wins apiece at the Narrows League softball tournament yesterday, both Bellarmine Prep and Wilson find themselves battling today for the league’s top seed to the district tournament in 4A and 3A, respectively.
The Lions took a 7-2 win in a loser-out match against Central Kitsap in the first round yesterday, scoring six runs in the first two innings. Alyssa McKiernan, Alex DeStephano and Rachel Sorensen had two runs batted in apiece, and starter Courtney Schwan picked up the complete-game victory. The Lions then won 3-2 over Olympia in their second game, as Ashlynn Ota’s single to score Madison Covell in the sixth inning proved to be the game winner. Rachel Barcena pitched five strong innings to pick up the win for the Lions.
Bellarmine Prep will face South Kitsap at 3 p.m. today at SERA Fields, with the winner receiving the top seed to districts and the loser claiming the second seed.
Wilson, meanwhile, cruised to a 19-0 win over Mount Tahoma in their opener yesterday, assuring themselves a spot at the district tournament. They went on to pick up a 3-1 win over Timberline in the second game, setting up for a matchup against North Thurston in today’s championship at 3 p.m. at SERA. The winner takes the top seed to districts, while the loser is the second seed.

The Narrows 3A and 4A softball tournaments begin today at SERA Fields, with four Tacoma squads battling for bids to the district tournament.
The first round of games begin at 1 p.m., headlined by Bellarmine Prep’s loser-out matchup against Central Kitsap. With a win, the Lions would be assured of a trip to districts, and would play again at 3 p.m. against Olympia for seeding. The Lions split the two matchups against the Cougars this year, winning 3-1 at home while falling 9-8 in Silverdale earlier in the season. A win in the first game would also assure the Lions a matchup on Friday at 3 p.m., in another game that will determine seeding.
The 3A action starts with another loser-out matchup between Wilson and Mount Tahoma at 1 p.m. The winner gets a bid to districts, but will move on to play Timberline at 3 p.m. and will play again on Friday at 3 p.m. The Rams won both matchups handily over the Thunderbirds this season.
Foss will try to pull an upset in another 3A loser-out matchup at 1 p.m. when they take on Shelton, whom they lost to twice earlier this season. The winner of that matchup gets a bid to districts and takes on North Thurston at 3 p.m., and will play again on Friday at 3 p.m. to determine seeding.

The Narrows 3A and 4A boys soccer regular seasons came to a close last night, with a wild shakeup in the 3A ranks highlighting the night’s action.
Wilson fought to a 3-3 draw with Shelton at Stadium bowl, earning the Rams the outright title in the Narrows 3A as they finished one point ahead of a trio of squads. The Rams earned the top seed to district play, where they will face off against the fourth seed from the Seamount/SPSL sub-district tournament on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Auburn Memorial Stadium. Their opponent will be the loser between Auburn Mountainview and Hazen, a match that will take place tonight at 7 p.m. at Renton Memorial Stadium.
With a 2-1 win at North Thurston last night – plus a combination of other factors – Mount Tahoma shot up to claim second place in the Narrows 3A last night. The Thunderbirds tied with Shelton and North Thurston with 22 overall points in the standings, but owned the tie breakers against both schools. With that, the Thunderbirds will be playing at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Highline Memorial Stadium against the loser of the match between Enumclaw and Bonney Lake. That match will take place tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Franklin Pierce High School.
Foss was squeezed out of the playoff picture last night, as they suffered a 3-2 upset loss at Lincoln to fall just short.

Stadium, meanwhile, fell 3-1 at Central Kitsap last night to see the Cougars overtake them for the Narrows 4A title by one point in the standings. With that, the Tigers will take the second seed to the district playoffs, where they will take on the seventh seed from the SPSL at noon on Saturday at Mount Tahoma Stadium. Their opponent will be the winner between Emerald Ridge and Auburn Riverside, a match that will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

Justin Jacobs drilled a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Auburn Riverside a 1-0 win over Bellarmine Prep this afternoon in the district playoffs, ending the Lions’ season.
With runners on second and third and two outs, Jacobs drilled a 1-0 pitch deep off Bellarmine starter Harry Stenberg into the right field corner to plate pinch runner Aaron Nguyen from second base. That was the lone big mistake for Stenberg, who allowed the lone run on six hits, with five walks and seven strikeouts in going the distance.
The Lions threatened to break through in the first two innings, as Brandon Thompson walked with two outs in the first, George Foley singled and the duo advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. But Ravens starter Noah Freelund retired Michael Ota on a grounder to escape unharmed. Andrew Patubo led off the second with a walk and John Bjork reached on an error a batter later with just one out, but Freelund again escaped by striking out Paul Huiras and getting Nathan Heath to ground out.
Stenberg, meanwhile, escaped a second-and-third threat with just one out in the bottom of the third by striking out Austin Marty for the second time in the game, while Ota came up with a brilliant diving catch on Kevin Thomson’s foul pop-up to end the inning. Daniel Casanova reached third with one out in the fourth, but Stenberg struck out Gavin Hettinger and Michael Robinson to again keep the game scoreless.
The Lions threatened again in the top of the seventh, as Patubo walked and advanced to second when Matthew Jacobsen was hit by a pitch with two outs. But reliever Brady Cummings got Heath to ground out to first, allowing for the heroics in the bottom half.

Bellarmine Prep will send a singles player and a doubles team to the 4A district tennis meet, while Stadium also will send a doubles pair to districts next weekend after their good results at the Narrows League Meet at the University of Puget Sound on May 3-4.
Senior Veena Ivengar will represent the Lions in the singles tournament after making it all the way to the finals, where she fell 6-1, 6-0 to South Kitsap Kaitlyn Skjonsby. Ivengar earned the second seed to districts, where she will face Auburn’s Aly Siemion – the seventh seed from the SPSL – on May 17 at 9 a.m. The 4A district meet will take place on May 17-18 at the Capitol City Court Club in Olympia.
Joining Ivengar from Bellarmine Prep will be the duo of Lions seniors Kennedy Takehara and Lucy Meske, who defeated Stadium seniors Katie Cribb and Emily Bower 7-5, 6-2 to win the third seed. They will take on Jefferson’s Toni Mullen and Rileigh Qualls on May 17 at 10:30 a.m. Lions seniors Kelly Titus and Meesha Sundarum are the first alternates to the district doubles tournament.
Cribb and Bower, meanwhile, earned the fourth seed to districts and will take on Kentridge’s Kyana Esber and Katie Ly on May 17 at 9:30 a.m.
