Our crack panel of Sports Writers are about to draft the selections for our ALL CITY high school football teams.

That's right. TEAMS - as in TWO teams, to be exact.

Most all-star teams have first, second and honorable-mention selections. We do it differently here at your Tacoma Weekly.

After years of research, we've found that there are usually too many players named to a second-team that have every right to be a first-teamer. However, there are really only so many slots available.

It's going to be a big day for football in Tacoma on Saturday. By way of state bracket magic, both Lincoln and Bellarmine will host state tournament quarterfinal football games this weekend against higher-ranked teams.


Fifth-ranked Lincoln (11-0) dropped a big 35-30 win on #3 O'Dea (9-2) Friday, Nov. 14 at Lincoln bowl. The 35 points were the most surrendered by O'Dea the entire season. The next closest amount of points given up was in the Fighting Irish's only other loss of the season; a 26-20 defeat by second-ranked Eastside Catholic - Lincoln's…

It was one of the largest crowds in decades at historic Lincoln Bowl and the Lincoln faithful had to stay until the joyful end as Jusstis Warren and Jeremy Lukosh sacked O'Dea quarterback Nathan West as time expired, snuffing any hope for a Fighting Irish comeback miracle.

The 35-30 Lincoln (11-0) victory moves the Abes on to the quarterfinals of the 3A state football tournament, but they won't be leaving town. Lincoln Bowl will host its second state playoff game in a row as the Abes welcome 2nd-ranked Eastside Catholic (10-1).

Friday night was a huge night for Tacoma public school football.

While the fifth-ranked Lincoln Abes took care of business in a contest they were heavily-favored to win, the additional news from Seattle's Memorial Stadium that the Wilson Rams led throughout and knocked-off Metro Valley champion Ballard was a big one.



It's been a long time since two Tacoma public schools advanced to the State 3A Tournament.

With the constant rain beating down upon historic Stadium Bowl, the Lincoln fans were screaming for a punt.

Some were absolutely beside themselves.

Facing fourth and 15 from the Wilson 45-yard line, the Lincoln Abes inexplicably, rolled the dice, with possibly an undefeated season and 3A Narrows crown on the line.

Up 6-3 with 1:44 remaining in the game, the Abes could have punted the ball. They could have turned it over to the defense. Both defenses had been fantastic and smothering all night.

Instead, it was time for a Jordan Kitna deep ball down the right sideline…
