The 2010 Soul of the City Writers Workshop Series launches this weekend

As part of her 2010 Urban Grace Church poet laureateship, local writer Tammy Robacker will be fulfilling her duties as representative of poetry for the city of Tacoma by holding workshops on the subject of poetry throughout the year. Her first in the series will be taking place July 18 from 2-4:30 p.m. at Urban Grace Church, and will include a few special guests and additional writers joining Robacker for the informative and helpful event. Two Tacoma artists play with darkness and light at Handforth Gallery

There’s a wondrous sense of play between light and dark in two art exhibits now on display in Handforth Gallery at the Tacoma Public Library. One collection, by local fine printing master and Springtide Press owner Jessica Spring, is titled “Unnatural Light.” The other, by Tacoma photographer and book artist Victoria Bjorklund, is titled “Blue Midnight.” Each collection stands on its own as food for thought on the world around us, and together they complement each other in numerous ways. Know your public art: Wright Park’s Ibsen monument

Between the Seymour Botanical Conservatory and the playground in Wright Park there is an enigmatic monument – a bust sculpture of a 19th century man (recognizably so by his outlandish facial hair) cast in bronze. The bust sits atop a stack of bronze-cast books and papers and the whole affair is mounted atop an eight-foot granite plinth inscribed with the name Henrik Ibsen boldly chiseled into its rustic surface. Bronze plaques inform us that Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright and poet born in 1828 and deceased in 1906. Ibsen is hailed as a progenitor of modernist theater who stripped his plays of the tasteful Victorian veneer and sought to examine the psychological motivation of his characters. Read more...
