The power of one

This is a companion story to A call for help during hard times.

Tacoma artist Deidre Perez Norris presented the Breast Cancer Resource Center with a donation check for $300 this week – an example of how people in the greater community can help support the Center when funding from big national organizations runs dry.

A gifted artist in repurposing gently used items into something new and wonderful, Norris (a.k.a. “A Girl Who Loves Junk”) has been selling her glass art flowers for home and garden at Chirp & Co. (3803 N 26th St.) for some time now. Five dollars from each sale goes to BCRC. She presented the check in person March 20 to BCRC Executive Director Janie Cunningham and Resource Room Coordinator Sarah Jones. Cunningham called Norris’ donation “extraordinary. I just love how everyone’s gifts and talents and passions can work to help build community and this Center. Honestly, I love that there are ‘pieces of the Center’ in gardens all over Tacoma now.”

“When I first started this, I knew that anything helps,” Norris said. She supports BCRC in honor of those she’s known who’ve passed away from breast cancer, including her cousin who died at 47 years old. “Also, two years ago, I participated in the Susan G. Koman 3 Day and our team member ended up passing away at 33 of breast cancer. My friend’s mom just passed away a couple weeks ago, and another lady I was walking for passed away too last year. Everyone I walked for have all passed.”

According to Cunningham, Pierce County has the highest breast cancer diagnosis rate in the state per capita, and Washington State is at the top in the country for such diagnoses. She said BCRC has had a 13-15 percent increase in client services just this year.

Cunningham noted that it doesn’t take a major outlay of money by individuals to help the Center stay solid – even $1 helps. “A million people sending in $1 – that’s the community support we need – just $1 to keep this lifeline here for women.” Visit BCRC’s Facebook page to learn about this novel fundraising campaign called “One Million Ones.”
