Giving – especially giving to Tacoma Weekly's Put A Sock In It drive – is good for the soul. It just makes you happy.
Now it can be good for the body, too. It can make you strong.
Tacoma Strength is the first business to join this year's sock drive – in part, because the gym, its members and owners had such a good time last year.
“Last year, Tacoma Strength participated in the Tacoma Weekly's Holiday 'Put A Sock In It' drive. We would like to be a part of it again this year,” Craig O'Hanlon wrote.
O'Hanlon, by the way, has the best job title in history: Hero Support for Tacoma Strength & Conditioning.
We also like his e-mail tag line: “Strong People Are Harder To Kill And More Useful In General.”
O'Hanlon continued: “Also, as an added bonus, in December at Tacoma Strength we are sponsoring a 2013 Burpee Challenge For Charity. Gym members are being asked to pledge $20 and then do 2013 Burpees or pull-ups during the month. That works out to about 65 Burpees per day or about 500 per week in addition to their regular gym workouts. (That’s a lot!)
“If they do complete the challenge, they won’t owe the pledge – though hopefully they will donate the money anyway. If they don't complete the challenge, then Tacoma Strength collects the pledged money, and we are planning to buy additional socks with it. We are toying with the idea of challenging other local gyms as well.”
After we did a few jumping jacks for joy at this news, we wondered what a Burpee is. It sounded harder than flexing our arms while holding a seed catalog.
Here, compliments of the Made Man website, is how you do a Burpee:
“Stand with your feet together and hands at your sides. Make sure there is plenty of room behind you and keep your feet on the mat. Bend and place your hands palms down on the mat and jump your feet back so you are in the push-up position. Jump your feet back in and stand up to your starting position.”
“Much more difficult than buying seeds and bulbs from Burpee's,” O'Hanlon said.

They've been sending the information to other gyms, which makes us happy - and adds another dimension to the idea of “Tacoma Strength.”
