Puyallup Tribe gives back

// Donation to Northwest Harvest to benefit 350 food banks throughout the state

Staying true to its tradition as the “generous people,” the Puyallup Tribe’s donation of $250,000 to Northwest Harvest will go far in the local fight to eliminate hunger. The donation alone will provide 1 million meals to families in need. “This donation means so much to us, because the need is growing in the community,” said Mike Hargreaves, board member of Northwest Harvest. Puyallup Tribal Council Vice Chairman Bill Sterud presented the check during a donation event Dec. 1 at Tacoma Mall. “It is an honor and a privilege to be in a position to help people, especially during the holidays,” Sterud said. Northwest Harvest distributed more than 26 million pounds of food last year through its network of 350 food banks. All food and operating funds come from individuals, businesses and foundations, with 92 percent of the total budget going to food distribution. “Our overhead is so incredibly low, and it’s amazing what we can do with a dollar,” Hargreaves added. “This donation makes a huge impact on the organization.”

The organization provides 1.7 million nutritious meals each month to its food banks. Tribal Council member Sylvia Miller said the Tribe is proud to play an important role in helping those in the community who need it most. “It is such a good thing that the Tribe can share its wealth with the people in need in the community,” she said. Throughout the day, members of the community drove carloads full of food donations to help Northwest Harvest reach its goal of 3 million meals through the event. “We were taught as children that the biggest thing a person will be remembered by is what they do for their people – not what they do for themselves,” said Councilmember David Bean. “We recognize that the economy is still recovering, and the need for help is still there.”
