Local Restuarants: A Taste of Philly

In his former career as the official barber for a certain football team to the north of us (Go Hawks!), Jason Kinlow was lucky enough to do a bit of traveling with the team. During a trip to Philadelphia, he experienced what would soon become his favorite food: the original Philly Cheesesteak.

"I fell in love with it," he said, not-so-jokingly. “I always had an itch to do something in the restaurant business and I noticed that this is something that is really underserved in Tacoma."

Many places in the area offer their own version of the Philly cheesesteak, but nothing that compares to the real thing, he says. After doing some research - and spending a lot of time in the kitchen practicing and experimenting - he had his recipes ready to go.

Located at 1402 Tacoma Ave. S., Go Philly Cheesesteaks and Wings opened in June and has been going strong ever since.

In Kinlow's opinion, to create a truly authentic cheesesteak, it all comes down to the bread and the quality of the ingredients. The restaurant takes authenticity seriously…so seriously that it ships bread directly from a bakery in Philadelphia.

"The fact that we use the bread that made Phillys famous, and we slice our top end beef in-house daily really adds to the quality of our product," Kinlow said.

The authentic, original cheesesteak offered at Go Philly features steak or chicken with grilled onions and melted white American, Provolone or Cheese Whiz ($8.95).

The menu includes variations on the traditional cheesesteak, including the Teriyaki (steak or chicken with teriyaki sauce, grilled onions and melted cheese, $8.95), Buffalo (steak or chicken with buffalo wing sauce, grilled onions and melted cheese), Pepper (steak or chicken with grilled onions sweet and hot peppers and melted cheese, $8.95), and more.

The restaurant also offers a variety of wings, cooked and tossed in their own spices and sauces.

The restaurant offers a daily lunch special, which includes a small cheesesteak, fries and a drink for $7.99.

Go Philly Cheesesteaks is open Mondays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The restaurant is at 1402 Tacoma Ave. S. Info: http://www.gophillycheesesteaks.com. Or call (253) 572-3000
