Letters to the Editor: Michael Kagan

Dear Editor,

There are indeed many good reasons for Tacoma City Council to pass a resolution to nullify Citizens United, but here is one perspective people do not usually consider: the amendment process itself. (Staff editorial, TW 11/23) When the council passes a resolution, it will join Seattle, Bellingham, Olympia, Port Townsend and the counties of Snohomish, Skagit, and Island in sending a message to our Legislature that the people of Washington are angry about being left out of the legislative process thanks to Citizens United.

Very few of us can afford a lobbyist, or access to elected officials. Thus, our concerns are not heard by those we elect. Our Legislature, upon realizing the overwhelming support the resolution has, will pass a memorial that will encourage Congress to act on an amendment to the Constitution. We will join hundreds of other municipalities and several states that have declared that corporations are not people and money is not speech. Because the 535 members of Congress know that this is the will of the people, they will understand that achieving ratification by three-fourths of the states will happen. Tacoma must act on this to urge Washington to stand up for the concept of one person, one vote.
