Join the Little Italy Reunion

// Restauranteur Stortini figures its time to do it again

Nine years ago many residents of the Irving Playfield-Stanley School neighborhood got together for a hugely successful reunion. Local restauranteur and community activist Joe Stortini helped organize that first event, which drew over 300 residents and friends. Stortini has decided it’s time to hold another reunion. He hopes this event will bring back not just residents but also younger people from those original families so that the memories can be continued through them.

The area included in the reunion is from Hwy. 16 to McCarver School, between South 12th and South 25th Streets, which is sometimes known as Little Italy. The reunion will be held on Sunday, November 7, at the Shriners Temple on South 8th and Vassault, next to Hunt Middle School. Social hour begins at 2 p.m. with the all you can eat buffet dinner starting at 3 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person.

Stortini wants anyone who was involved with this area in any way to come to the reunion. “To be successful we need you and your family to attend. Bring your camera, pictures and memories. If you can recall any that lived in this area give them an invite or call a member of the reunion committee so we can send them an invitation.” The area’s oldest resident, Lou Costanti, age 97, will be one of the speakers.

In addition to the photo and memorabilia display, there will be a memorial wall honoring all those who have passed away. Attendees are invited to bring along items for this display also.

To make reservations, call Stortini at (253) 537-4628 or Joanne Armour at (253) 564-6167. Please RSVP by October 30.

Stortini guarantees that this reunion will be great fun. “Don’t miss the chance to see old friends and remember fond memories of the old neighborhood.”
