For those struggling to make ends meet home repairs, such as insulation and fixing leaky pipes, is often the last priority. But, these improvements become more important when chilly winter temperatures set in.

One nonprofit organization is helping low-income residents overcome their obstacles to repair and winterize their homes this season, with help from volunteer skilled workers and donations from local businesses.

Rebuilding Together South Sound helps low-income homeowners make repairs and small modifications to their houses for free. The national organization, made up of more than 200 affiliates across the country, has completed more than $3 million in home repairs since forming nine years ago.

This month, the organization is taking applications for emergency repairs as part of its year-round home modification program. This program provides ramps, stairs, grab bars, walk-in showers and other adaptations to make a home safer for residents with limited mobility.

Organizers and volunteers hope to complete 70 projects this year through the modification program, according to Drew Carrigan, outreach coordinator for Rebuilding Together South Sound.

“We have seen a great need in the community,” Carrigan said. “We are stepping up to fill this gap.”

The organization relies solely on its volunteers to complete the home improvement projects, and will need skilled workers to accomplish their repair goals this year, Carrigan said.

Skilled plumbers, roofers, electricians, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning professionals are in highest demand, but organizers say every helping hand will make a difference in the lives of local families.

“Many in our community that have been touched by the economic downturn or personal crises are worried about making it through the winter,” Carrigan said. “We are here to ensure that they will.”
