Tacoma City Councilmember David Boe realizes now that he should have recused himself from voting on a contract for remodeling Cheney Stadium on March 9. An architect, Boe was appointed to a vacant council position in January. Shortly before this selection was made, he offered assistance to a client and friend, Wade Perrow, who submitted one of three bids for the job. Boe drew some sketches, for which he was not paid.
Mortenson Construction got the job, with Boe casting the dissenting vote. Controversy has emerged since his participation with Perrow’s bid became public knowledge.
Council members sometimes are in a position where legally they could vote on a matter, but they opt not to because of the appearance they may have a conflict of interest. A Fife City Councilmember just resigned to avoid such a perception after getting a promotion at his full-time job.
We will chalk up Boe’s misstep to inexperience. With five new members out of nine total, this council has a considerable learning curve on a number of fronts. Boe’s enthusiasm, and sense of humor, are good qualities he brings to city hall. He now realizes his position comes with considerable scrutiny from the media and public. Lesson learned.
