When Amber Thiel was in her mid-20s, she was tired. Exhausted, even. Devastated by the passing of her mother, Thiel, at 23, struggled to deal with the loss while living in a society that says you must be thin to be pretty, successful and smart. She battled bulimia, counted her calories and attempted to ‘exercise’ her demons away. It wasn’t until several years later that she chose to make a change in her life, cutting herself free from the daily obsession over calories and exercise, and chose to get healthy. For the first time in her life, she focused on the idea of getting healthy by working with her body, instead of against it.
“On the outside, people would say I looked great, but I was in my mid-20s and exhausted,” she said. “I thought if this is what life is, I don’t know how I’m going to keep up with how much effort it’s taking to look this way.”
With a background in human nutrition and biology, she understood the basics of nutrition, but never truly applied it to her own life. “We’re never told in the media that basic, good nutrition is what can get you the body of your dreams,” she said.
She became a personal trainer, and learned that the many women she trained had similar stories, only many were mothers who had families to take care of and other struggles to deal with. “I felt this overwhelming sense of purpose, that this is my mom’s legacy,” Thiel said. “My journey was fueled by her death, and these women deserve to hear my story and how I overcame what they’re currently going through.”
Through this journey, The Healthy Edge was born, and its eight-week program has drastically changed the lives of countless clients around the world. This online program comes with a guidebook, cookbook, and help from a certified coach along the way.
On Nov. 7 and 8, Healthy Edge Live will take place at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Tacoma.
