Tacoma Musical Playhouse Invites the Public to See Remodeled Theater

Tacoma Musical Playhouses, Jon Douglas Rake, Founder and Managing Artistic Director, is proud to announce plans to showcase the newly renovated Tacoma Musical Playhouse stage and auditorium, to the public, at 7116 Sixth Ave.

TMP hosts this grand opening celebration, on Saturday, October 19, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the remodel was to increase the size of the stage area both on and offstage to better accommodate actors, backstage crews, sets and to enhance the sound quality in the auditorium itself by adding an orchestra loft back stage, moving the sound booth to audience level and adding acoustic treatment to the auditorium walls. These changes have greatly enhanced TMP's patron performance experience. “These changes will allow us to grow our productions and programs,” says Jon Douglas Rake Managing Artistic Director and Founder of TMP.

Thanks to their generosity, TMP received grants from the Dimmer, Forest, Norcliffe, Sequoia, and Titus-Wills Family Foundations, the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust, along with gifts of support from TMP patrons and art advocates in the South Puget Sound. TMP raised $1,200,000 to complete this project.

Founded in 1994, TMP is the largest community theater in the four-state northwest region and among the top twelve in the nation. TMP presents six high-quality, full-scale musical theater

productions per season, each with a live orchestra, Broadway-style sets and costumes, and award-winning choreography. Through new and innovative ideas, TMP introduces the audience to theater premieres along with new variations of older standards.

TMP is also the home of Theater for Young Audiences (TYA at TMP). These productions are fully staged musical theater versions of classic children’s literature brought to life by adult actors for family audiences.

The Narrows Theater, built in 1949, was designed as a movie theater. It was never built with live orchestration in mind. TMP began leasing the facility in 1996 and purchased the West End complex in 2001. Many renovations to the building have been made over the years. They include such updates as a new lobby, concession area, office space, a greenroom for the actors, and new larger public facilities. This remodel project completes the goals of creating a state-of-the-art facility designed specifically for live musical theater and allows performing arts patrons from around the region to enjoy high-quality musical theater performances long into the future of the South Puget Sound region.
