Tacoma Art Museum celebrates building’s 10th birthday

Tacoma Art Museum’s building is turning 10 years old and there’s going to be a party to celebrate. Come and join in the festivities and welcome in the spring at TAM’s 10th Birthday Spring Festival on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum admission and all festival events will be free of charge for Saturday’s celebration.
Tacoma Art Museum moved to 1701 Pacific Ave. in 2003. Architect Antoine Predock saw in Tacoma’s misty, muted light a great opportunity to design a building that almost disappears into its surroundings, much like how Mount Rainier fades depending on the light and weather. The building’s stainless steel skin pays homage to its industrial, port city surroundings as its silver patina glistens in the Northwest’s watery light.
After 10 years of continuous use as “the community’s living room,” TAM staff and volunteers welcome the public to a family-oriented celebration with a variety of activities to choose from. Magician Jeff Evans will mystify with his skills while the music ensemble Jazz Misfits gets guests into a party groove. Hands-on art activities ramp up the artistic spirit and include decorating a flat Leroy (the museum’s famous dog mascot) and the chance to design your own pop-up flower garden card. Like to make art with others? Then turn your attention to decorating the community color wheel installation or join the community collage activity in front of the museum on the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation Plaza. When you need a short break, watch a performance by the students of Grant Elementary or visit the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Art Resource Center located on the third floor of the museum and learn about Northwest artists by reading a book in TAM’s extensive art library or watching a short film on the subject.

Schedule of events:
·     11 a.m. – Magic performance by Jeff Evans
·     Noon – Performance by Grant Elementary students
·     12:30 p.m. – Live jazz performance by Jazz Misfits
·     Ongoing – Design a pop-up flower garden card, decorate a flat Leroy, join the community collage.
