The Tacoma Pocket Gopher, a subspecies of the Mazama Pocket Gopher, and the Western Pocket Gopher, has been listed as extinct. They haven't been seen in years.
The gopher once dug the prairie lands of the county before roads, Scotch broom and development took their toll.
But an effort is afoot to save its cousins, which could lead to restrictions of training at Joint Base Lewis McChord.
