Puyallup Appoints New City Manager

The Puyallup City Council appointed Interim City Manager Bill McDonald to serve as the city’s top executive for a period of approximately one-year.

Bill McDonald has served the city of Puyallup on an interim basis since August 2012. McDonald returned to public service after retiring in 2010, and brings 42 years of experience in local government throughout Washington and Oregon. His previous positions include City Administrator of DuPont; City Manager of Snohomish; City Manager of Clatskanie, Ore; and County Commissioner of Columbia County, Ore.

McDonald holds an MPA from Portland State University, and his professional awards include the 2010 Excellence Award from the Washington City County Management Association.

Puyallup’s City Council cited McDonald’s experience and strength in budget development among their reasons for ending the search for a new top executive. The Council has stated an intent to resume the search for a permanent City Manager in mid-2013, with the goal of having a new chief appointed official in place in January 2014.

Puyallup’s Mayor Rick Hansen stated that “Bill McDonald has proven himself to be a strong, solid leader who can move the city in the right direction, particularly through the next budget process.”
