Public invited to discussion of controversial education program ‘Common Core’

The public is invited to a public discussion of the new, controversial public school program called Common Core. The meeting is free and will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the University Place library. The address is 3609 Market Pl., in the Lakewood Town Center. Light refreshments will be served.
Common Core is a new set of nation-wide education standards set to go into place in all Washington public schools next school year. It includes new curriculum and testing, and was adopted by the Washington State Legislature in 2010 before the new standards were fully developed. It is controversial in part because local school boards will lose some control over their schools’ operations.
The presentation, sponsored by the 28th District Republican Club, will be made and moderated by Sharon Hanek, a self-described “research mom,” and Cris Shardelman, an education watchdog in the state. No reservations are required.
