I don't know about you guys, but around the Tacoma Weekly offices we're pretty stoked about seeing Robert Downey Jr. don the red and gold armor one more time for“Iron Man 3.” Marvel Studios' latest 3D superhero flick was expected to be this summer movie season's first box office blockbuster. And so far it hasn't disappointed, having raked in nearly $200 million in overseas markets, as of Monday.
In the days leading up to the U.S. Opening, on May 3, we put together a panel of local comic book gurus to deconstruct Iron Man's two-dimensional roots and speculate on what might come flying off the screen this weekend. There will be a related story in Friday's paper. But, meanwhile, we thought we'd post an interview outtake (below) to coax out your inner nerd.
The first voice you'll hear is Jason McKibbin, avid comic book collector, co-founder of Comics-4-Kids.org and lead singer of local punk band I-Defy. The second is John Munn, longtime owner of now-defunct comic book shop, Comic Book Ink, and managing artistic director of Lakewood Playhouse. The third is little ol' me. And the last is Eugene Kirk, owner of Tricky's Pop Culture Emporium, recently relocated to Tacoma's Stadium District.
Oh, and the beeps and bloops in the background are mostly "Spyhunter." We took our boys to Dorky's Barcade downtown to help them focus on all things nerdy. Enjoy, and see you at the movies.
