Milloy honored in return to Lincoln

Coming back to your alma mater to be honored is always special. But in Lawyer Milloy’s case the numbers and honors speak for themselves. Milloy returned to Lincoln High School on Sept. 21 and had his number 26 retired at halftime of the Abes’ game versus North Thurston, with head coach and former NFL quarterback Jon Kitna presenting the honor to Milloy.

Milloy started his football career at Lincoln, continued at the University of Washington and played professionally with the New England Patriots, the Buffalo Bills, the Atlanta Falcons and last but not least, the Seattle Seahawks. The numbers and honors are too numerous to name, but his return on this night was for another reason also – the naming of the new Lincoln weight room in his honor by Kitna, his former teammate and close friend.

“I am extremely honored by this, the fact that my name and accomplishments are here means even more,” Milloy said.

Eminently proud of where he came from, Milloy remembers where he got his beginning. “I always carried Tacoma with me, at the UW and everywhere I went in my pro career. T-town and the black and gold were first and foremost in my heart.”

Deeply grateful for everything in his life, Milloy gave credit where it was due for his success in life. “Coach Bill Milus and Dr. Walker meant so much to me, whenever there was a chance I could get in trouble off the field, they were always there for me.”

Milus, who coached both Kitna and Milloy at Lincoln and passed away last February, left an indelible mark on Milloy. “I can’t say enough about coach Bill, God rest his soul.” One can talk about honors bestowed upon themself, but Milloy appreciates the smaller things in life. “The Super Bowl in 2001 with New England and the sophomore All-American honors with the Huskies were great, but in the end, there’s nothing like coming back to Tacoma and Lincoln High School.”

A great example for future Abes to follow both now and in the future.
