Bay Area jazz diva Lavay Smith and Tacoma native turned reality TV star LeRoy Bell are the main musical attractions at this year’s Spring Zing. The festival will take place from April 12 and 13 in Tacoma’s Proctor District.
Smith will be backed by the University of Puget Sound Jazz Band instead of her usual group, the Red Hot Skillet Lickers, at 7:30 p.m. on April 12 at the Blue Mouse Theatre, 2611 N. Proctor St. Tickets are $7 general admission, $4 for UPS students, and can be purchased through the UPS web site.
Bell may look half his age, but his career actually spans back to the disco era when his duo Bell and James reached No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 with breakthrough 1979 hit “Livin’ It Up (Friday Night).” He’d been a popular Northwest solo act for years before he made a splash on Fox-TV’s “The X-Factor” in 2011. And Leroy Bell & His Only Friends will headline a free outdoor concert April 13 in front of Safeway, 2411 N. Proctor St. The concert will run from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., and will also feature opening acts Kim Archer Band and the Profess-ers,
The Spring Zing is sponsored by the North Proctor Merchants Association and ASUPS student programs, and will also feature free horse carriage rides, Proctor Farmers Market, food trucks, and performances throughout the neighborhood.
