Group Health members in the Tacoma area now have access to 24/7 care at the Tacoma Medical Center’s new, full-service urgent care, located at 209 Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
Opening Oct. 8, the expanded urgent care will have 19 care rooms—12 exam rooms, four observation rooms, three cardiac beds, and a triage room—all open 24-hours.
“With a newly expanded urgent care we can provide our members with more convenient and cost effective care round-the-clock,” said Jim Leonard, Tacoma Market Development Vice President for Group Health. “The urgent care is designed to meet the expected growth in members and utilization in the years to come.” The urgent care, housed in the first floor, currently sees approximately 24,000 Group Health member visits a year and with the expanded capacity Group Health can now accommodate more than double that amount.
The medical center opened in Tacoma in the early 1990s to serve the growing Tacoma area population. Today the medical center sees approximately 140,000 members seeking care each year. Since there was no new space to add on to the existing building, Group Health reconfigured existing services and equipment to other parts of the building to create space for an urgent care on the first floor.
The Group Health Tacoma Medical Center is home to more than 16 specialties including obstetrics and gynecology, cardiologist, orthopedics, neurology and family medicine. Patients can also visit the lab, pharmacy, and radiology all in this comprehensive medical center located in the heart of the Tacoma medical district.
It’s important for members to know an urgent care is different from an emergency room because it is a cost effective way for patients to seek treatment for non-life threatening emergencies.
Group Health also offers members access to a 24/7 Consulting Nurse Hotline to help members evaluate the situation and find the right care.
This December, Group Health is also opening a new Puyallup Medical Center complete with a green roof, the latest in new technology.
