Grit City Comedy Club is headed downtown. Since 2011, owners Aaron Flett and Vince Miller have been operating Grit City out of the lounge space at Malarkey's, 445 Tacoma Ave. S. But now they're setting up shop in the new 502 Martini Bar & Lounge, which had its soft opening last Friday at 100 S. 9th St. Grit City hosted its first shows there over the weekend, headlined by “Last Comic Standing” alumnus Eric Blake.
“We're running both clubs at the same time for a month. Then we'll be out of Malarkey's permanently,” said Flett, who also performs standup comedy under the alias Riggs.
Until recently, the space was occupied by Big Whisky and Comedy Underground. Big Whisky's owners recently moved out and rebranded another of their downtown properties - the Varsity Grill, at 1114 Broadway - as country themed steak house Steel Creek.
Grit City Comedy is taking over the Comedy Underground's space in the basement. “The Comedy Underground has been in there for 10 years, but it's been kind of floundering,” Flett said. “(The 502 owner) Chuck (Haines) wanted to make comedy relevant again in that space, so he got a hold of us.”
Flett said his club will only remain downstairs for a month or two, until 502 owners renovate the roomier second floor space.
