Five powerhouse acts advance in South Sound Blues’ Back to Beale Street competition

We now know at least one act that will represent Washington at Memphis' prestigious International Blues Challenge next January.

The South Sound Blues Association held its annual Back to Beale Street Competition yesterday at Jazzbones. I helped judge, and we picked dynamic boogie-woogie keyboardist Arthur Migliazza to advance out of the solo/duo acts competing yesterday. He'll go directly to the IBC competition, which will conclude at Memphis' Orpheum Theatre on Jan. 25.

Crazy Texas Gypsies (in video below) were top dogs out of the bands competing yesterday. Also advancing to the next round are the ever-popular Randy Oxford Band, Enumclaw's genre blurring Palmer Junction, fronted by the vocally gifted Jenny Lee; and 19-year-old guitar prodigy Cody Rentas' band. A winner will be chosen out of those four on July 4 at Freedom Fair.
