Cop hits suspect with patrol car

At approximately 9 p.m. last night, a Tacoma police officer went to contact a subject at 15th and J St. The subject fled on foot, the officer pursued in his vehicle. The suspect stopped and came toward the officer in a threatening manner, reaching toward his waistband. The officer, reacting to the threat, struck the subject with the patrol vehicle. The suspect fled and was taken into custody a few blocks away. A weapon was found next to the patrol vehicle.

The suspect had no obvious sign of injury but was transported to the hospital due to his complaint of leg pain. The suspect will be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer once medically cleared.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave as is procedure following a lethal use of force. An investigation of the use of force was initiated per policy. The officer was not injured in the incident. He has been a Tacoma police officer for 26 years.
