Saturday, May 28
The Outdoor Challenge is part scavenger hunt, part adventure race in Tacoma’s big, beautiful Point Defiance Park. Teams will participate in different outdoor activities throughout the park to gain points. Once you and your team reach 100 points, head to the finish line! You must stick together as a team the whole time and earn your points collaboratively. Race materials, including a map and list of challenges, will be distributed at the start of the race. Racers can pick and choose from the challenges on their list to reach 100 points. Not all challenges must be completed. You choose, and then rack up your points whichever way seems best to you. Check-in is at 10 a.m., with an awards ceremony following the competition at 2:30 p.m.
Morgan Family YMCA Dance Department presents, “It’s Showtime,” a presentation of dance entertainment through film, television, musical theater, books, sports, opera, ballet and musical artists. Come join in the showcase of dance through all art mediums. The event will take place at the Pantages Theater at 7 p.m. Tickets: $8-$13. Info: www.ymcapkc.org.
JAZZ AND BLUES FEST
Free admission, all ages event on three stages Gather up the family and head to downtown Tacoma on Saturday for the 2011 Tacoma Jazz and Blues Festival. Free parking and festival jumping off point are at Freighthouse Square, which is the best place to park and ride the light rail for free back and forth to the other venues. Great food, great jazz and blues in wonderful venues and better than ever, bring your friends! GET LOOSE AND BLUESY
Tacoma’s beloved bearded bluesman Loose Gravel takes the stage at the Spar Tavern for the weekly Sunday Blues night, beginning at 7 p.m. No cover. 21 and over, only.
Monday, May 30
DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
Celebrate Memorial Day with a Day of Remembrance service and dedication of a World War I monument bearing the names of 162 Pierce County fallen soldiers. Keynote speaker Chaplain Major Kenneth Alford will lead the event, which will take place at War Memorial Park, located at 6th Avenue and MacArthur Street. All are welcome. Info: (253) 752-7722.
JUMPIN’ DAY OFF!
