Supporters of the effort to recall Pierce County Assessor/Treasurer Dale Washam went to the County Auditor’s Office this morning to submit petitions with signatures of voters. According to Bill Baarsma, a Taccoma resident active in the effort, supporters turned in 67,189 signatures. To place this matter on the ballot in November, 65,500 valid signatures must be submitted. The goal is to submit 80,000 by Aug. 30. Baarsma said at the rate petitions are being signed, he feels between 78,000 and 80,000 signatures will be collected by the end of the month.
Baarsma has been collecting signatures at Proctor Farmers Market on Saturdays. He said about 33 percent of people he approaches have already signed, about 40 percent do not wish to sign or do not know who Washam is and the remainder sign. He said Broadway Farmers Market, held on Thursdays downtown, has been more difficult since many people are on their lunch break and are in a hurry.
"Overall there has been a pretty positive buzz," he said. Baarsma noted that 80,000 signatures represents 10 percent of the total population of the county. "This has been a huge endeavor."
