Tacoma General Hospital earns ‘Gold Plus’ for stroke care

MultiCare Health System’s Tacoma General Hospital received the 2012 "Get With The Guidelines" Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award, presented by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

It is the only hospital in Pierce County that has been so recognized for providing the highest level of stroke care.

The award recognizes Tacoma General Hospital’s commitment and success in providing excellent care for stroke patients, according to evidence-based guidelines. Tacoma General Hospital’s Stroke Program also has earned Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval – the highest possible – with the elite designation as a Primary Stroke Center. Tacoma General is categorized as a Level 1 (Comprehensive) Stroke Center by Washington State Department of Health.

“Tacoma General Hospital is one of only a few institutions in the state that offers the most advanced stroke and neurovascular care,” said Brian Kott, MD, Medical Director of the Stroke Program and Neuro Interventional Radiology at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital.

The hospital offers the latest treatments such as clot-dissolving medications and neurosurgical endovascular interventions. Doctors at Tacoma General Hospital can perform life-saving procedures inside the vessels of the brain to treat strokes and aneurysms without invasive surgery.

In addition to Dr. Kott, the physician team includes Dr. Alison Nohara and Dr. Dennis Wang.

The Tacoma Weekly’s poll question this week was simple. It was “Why do you bike, or don't bike, around town?”

The top vote getter was “Because biking is fun,” with 38 percent of the vote, followed by “I don't bike anywhere because it seems dangerous,” with 23 percent.

Rounding out the poll was “To save money on gas,” “Because I don't have a car,” and “Because it is my exercise for the day,” which all received 8 percent each.

Tacoma becomes more sustainable, reducing both costs and carbon footprint

The City of Tacoma has reduced both costs and its carbon footprint by tackling strategies to become a more sustainable city.

Tacoma’s sustainability accomplishments for 2011 include cutting fuel costs by more than $770,000 from 2010 and reducing paper usage by 75 percent. Paper purchases in 2011 were $135,000 less than in 2009.

Fuel savings are attributed to a decrease in use of fuel for fleet vehicles and a reduction in reimbursements for personal vehicle travel.

As Tacoma’s sustainability manager, Kristin Lynett encourages and monitors the city’s success in implementing the strategies outlined in Tacoma’s Climate Action Plan. The plan, adopted in 2008, established carbon reduction goals for city government and the community and outlined more than 40 new strategies to achieve those goals.

“Departments all across the city are making progress in becoming more sustainable,” Lynett said. “Although not everything is immediately measurable, we can document many successes and improvements.”

A report on 2011 sustainability highlights is available at www.cityoftacoma.org/sustainability.
