Things We Like

WILD EYED SOUTHERN BOYS

.38 Special is one of the bands that introduced the world to Southern rock. Formed in Jacksonville, Fla. in 1975, the group released its debut album two years later. 1979’s “Rockin’ Into The Night” and 1981’s “Wild-Eyed Southern Boys” established them as important artists in this genre. They will perform at Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma at 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 12. Tickets are $20, $35, $55 and $60.

80s DANCE PARTY

Hosted by the Puyallup High School Class of 1986, everyone is welcome to this “post-reunion” after party Aug. 13 at Hells Kitchen beginning at 9 p.m., $7 at the door. The 80’s flashback band Rewind will provide the nostalgic, New Wave tunes as you dance the night away in your flashiest, tackiest 80’s gear.

FERN HILL HISTORY WALK

Two of the most important roads of Tacoma’s pioneer times intersected at Fern Hill. The Byrd Mill Road (today’s South 84th Street) connected Steilacoom with the Puyallup Valley, and the Indian Henry Trail ran from Mount Rainier to Commencement Bay. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Fern Hill was a hub for streetcar lines. Learn all about it in a free history walk on Saturday, Aug. 13. The Tacoma Historical Society event is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. at Fern Hill United Methodist Church, 501 S. 84th St. Escorted walks will leave at 1:15 and 2 p.m. For more info, visit www.tacomahistory.org or call (253) 472-3738.

THE TACOMA SKUNK

The infamous Tacoma Skunk design, created by local artist Ryan Loiselle, is now in decal form and at Amocat Café. It comes in a plethora of different colors and is cheap for half the price – only $6! What are you waiting for!? Represent! Amocat is at 625 St. Helens Ave. While you’re there, drop off a festive (make you smile) pair of girls or boys

socks. This month's sock donations are going to Stand Up for Kids Tacoma.
