The power of words

The artwork of Brian Watson is on view through Feb. 2 at Tahoma Unitarian Universalist Congregation (TUUC). A sculptor and carver, Watson’s work is an intimate reflection on the power that words can have. With inspirations from the simple single expression to quotations from Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Theodore Roethke and others, each piece conveys quiet beauty and deep meaning.

“I see my work as a way to make the meaning of the words I carve penetrate deeper into the fabric of our lives,” Watson said. “The presence of the hand-carved letter exerts a powerful invitation to stop and let the texture of the piece - the play of light and shadow - reveal the text. In my work, you can trace the text with your eye and your hand by pressing your fingers into the text itself.”

Watson lives and works in Bremerton. He earned his bachelor’s degree in fine art in 1992 from Pacific Lutheran University and his master’s in art in 1995 from the University of Puget Sound. In addition to his work as a sculptor, Watson also paints in oils and acrylics and enjoys photography. He has worked as an art teacher and artist in residence, gallery director and picture framer as well.

The art gallery is open every Sunday and by arrangement with the church administrator. TUUC is located at 1115 S. 56th St. For information, call (253) 474-4646.
