Continuing its mission to go above and beyond your average night of fun and entertainment, The Deltan Club at 733 Commerce St. is proving to be a major hot spot in the Tacoma nightlife scene. On Aug. 18 some of the South Sound’s most popular blues, folk and rock artists will headline a night there of old favorites and new offerings, including a fresh new band sure to pique the ear of music fans.

DJ Ninja Kat, fresh from the Urban Art Fest stage last month, will start spinning the beats at 7 p.m. Then at 8 p.m., a new female duo The Whoopee Cats will play their own unique blend of soulful blues and folk music. The band features lead singer Laurel Lundgren (with a voice “kinda like Norah Jones with claws and fangs,” as she describes it) and guitarist Jill Nelson, who delivers backing vocals and shows off her mad skills on acoustic and electric guitar. The Whoopee Cats play a variety of cover songs, but it is the memorable lyrics and melodies of their original music that are quickly building a loyal fan base.

“Our power is in our music, not in our speakers,” said Lundgren.

At 9 p.m., Maurice the Fish Records CEO and singer/songwriter/pianist Raymond Hayden takes the stage with numerous special guests including Susan Renville (vocalist and Hayden’s band mate in The Jupiter Order); Scotty Malone (also of The Jupiter Order and lead guitarist for Sevens Revenge); and Chris Tussing (longtime drummer for Kim Archer Band) and more.

Along with his two solo CDs, “A Doorway Through Your Tears” and “September Sky” (both available on iTunes), Hayden possesses a wealth of material to perform, and he delivers every time like the pro that he is. Hayden is also a producer, radio show host and has been an official voting member of The Grammys since 1996.

Kim Archer Band rounds out the night’s line-up at 10:30 – a band that really needs no introduction given their immense popularity. Archer is another one who never disappoints her audience – when she is on she is on every time. Just like her music – a mix of old-school soul, funk and classic rock, sultry blues and ballads – Archer is a one-of-a-kind performer with a backing band that is tops: Tussing on drums, Chris Hyde on guitar, Jerome (Jbones) Gates on bass and Leah Tussing on backing vocals.
