Arts Downtown Puyallup is urging East Pierce County residents to “Put a little art” in their souls this month.
The outdoor gallery is hosting the second annual “Put a Little Art in Your Soul” fundraising event for the organization on April 10 at the indoor Pioneer Pavilion in downtown Puyallup.
The evening begins with a no-host social hour and auction preview. Organizers will host two silent auctions, a live auction and a dessert auction. Items have been donated from local merchants, individuals and businesses throughout Pierce and King counties. A portion of proceeds benefits the Puyallup Valley Food Bank.
Music provided during the auction is courtesy of Mike Nelson Trio, a jazz/blues band from Tacoma. Local restaurant Uncle Thurm’s Finger Lickin’ Chicken and Ribs will provide plenty of “soul food” to satisfy taste buds.
Arts Downtown, Puyallup’s Outdoor Gallery, is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization that curates a rotating and permanent collection of quality outdoor art.
Event Chair Chris Hite said that last year the event attracted 210 participants. She credits the event’s popularity to its fun, relaxed and casual atmosphere.
This fundraiser has allowed the organization to continue the goal of promoting diverse artistic culture and increase visual literacy. It also allows organizers to embrace the community and educate people about Arts Downtown.
“The money raised has gone toward purchasing art for the outdoor art gallery,” Hite said.
Currently, the gallery has more than 60 pieces on a two-year rotating cycle. West Coast artists created most of the pieces the gallery receives.
During the event, participants will get the opportunity to meet some of these artists and discuss their work. Hite urges anyone who enjoys public art to attend the fundraiser.
“With all these budget cuts everyone is having to make, a lot of funds are going elsewhere,” Hite said. “Art is important because it helps beautify our community.”
