Local couple Duane and Judy Carlson Hulbert are ready to test out another one of their original musicals, six years in the making, during the Proctor Summer Arts Festival Aug. 4. The premiere of “Go Cindy Go” will take place at 2 p.m. at the Blue Mouse Theater.
Carlson Hulbert explained the plot is a retelling of a Cinderella story set in a Washington town in 1967. “It’s a time when there are a lot of changes going on in the world,” she explained.
The star of the show, Cindy, is a teenager who is dealing with a father in Vietnam, a new stepfamily and fairy godmothers, with some romance mixed in, of course.
Cindy is played by Curtis High School graduate Sonya Meyer, and Stadium High School grad Marty Shanstrom portrays Kent, the object of Cindy’s romantic interests.
“Go Cindy Go” is the third musical written by the husband-wife team. Their previous musicals were “The Last of the Dragons” and “Bertram the Shakespearean Bat.”
Duane Hulbert, a Grammy-nominated pianist, is professor of music at the University of Puget Sound and a frequent performer in the Northwest; Carlson Hulbert is artistic director of The North End Children’s Theatre.
The production of “Go Cindy Go” will be presented concert style with scripts in the hands of the 22 cast members, who will be accompanied by a small pit orchestra of trumpet, saxophone, bass, drums and keyboard - played by Duane Hulbert. The score features original music inspired by the 1960s.
The cast has been preparing for the performance for about three weeks, according to Carlson Hulbert. “It’s going to be fun,” she predicted, and the musical is appropriate for all ages.
Admission is free, and the musical runs about 90 minutes with one intermission.
