The Tacoma-Pierce County chapter of the League of Women Voters (LOWV) has a lot to celebrate this year. Valentine’s Day will mark the League’s 90th birthday, though according to chapter President Terri Baker, the League in Tacoma is actually 100 years old.
“We started in Tacoma 100 years ago and that’s what started it in the country. We were forerunners of what happened in the country. The 90th birthday is significant because it coincides with the history of the women’s right to vote with Washington state, 10 years ahead of the country.”
The chapter is celebrating in a unique way, by putting together a vintage fashion show set to the theme of “Still Fashionable,” complete with desserts and drinks to highlight all the ways in which women’s fashion has evolved in that time.
“We were looking for a way to show the change in women over 90 years and thought that fashion would be a way to do it. We’re having trouble finding people that fit into the clothing. Individuals who bring them can wear theirs, and we may have to get students to do smaller sizes,” Baker affirmed.
As a result, individuals who attend the show can be models, as will be many of the members of the League. Desserts will be brought in by members and will consist of an assortment of sweets as well as the usual accompaniments of coffee, tea and other warm beverages.
Anyone who is interested (men and women) can come to the event, and in addition to the fashion show there will be a talk about the League and other fun events to help celebrate the 90th birthday.
The LOWV is an organization that holds many presentations and seminars focused on informing the community on public policy through education and advocacy. “We’re going to have a seminar on why we pay taxes on March 5, and the public is invited to that. It will be held at Tacoma campus of Evergreen State College,” Baker stated. Most of the organization’s activities are education-related, particularly geared toward voters. Men are welcome to join as well. “We have about 130 members in Pierce County, with an average age of 40 upward, comprised of working women, retired, and we get the gamut of political parties. We’re non-profit, free to be whatever party and we have discussions and disagreements come up but we want people to voice opinions,” she said.
Men and women, families and friends can take in an all-encompassing, comprehensive fashion show, desserts and an excellent Valentine’s Day outing at the LOWV’s 90th birthday party.
The League of Women Voters’ 90th Birthday Fashion Show will take place on Feb. 14 from 2-4 p.m. at Immanuel Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall, located at 909 N. ‘J’ St. Admission is free. For more information, call (253) 272-1495 or visit the League’s website at www.lwvwa.org/tacoma/
