If you want blood, you’ve got it

All The Hellbound is out for blood - literally.

The Tacoma-based heavy metal band consists of D.J. Chiarolla on guitar and lead vocals, John Stahlman on bass and Todd Stotz on drums.

The current line-up has been together for three years. The first incarnation had a different guitarist, with Chiarolla only singing. When the original guitarist left, Chiarolla played a demo tape of himself playing guitar, which convinced the other two that he was up to that task as well.

Stahlman and Stotz have known each other for years and have played in some bands together. The band’s name came from a title of a song from one of their prior bands. Stahlman designed their logo.

The band’s album “Sin Never Sleep” contained a cover of “Lose Yourself” by Eminem. Their latest album, “Black Death,” has a cover of “Rainbow in the Dark,” an early 1980s hit by Dio. They were going to cover another Dio song, “Holy Diver,” until the Massachusetts band Killswitch Engage scored a hit with their version.

Stahlman and Stotz grew up on metal in the 1980s. Chiarolla is the youngster, growing up with the alternative rock of the early 1990s.

Most of their original songs begin with Chiarolla playing riffs in practice. They have considered adding a second guitarist but likely will not do so. “Outside of the band we are friends,” Stotz said. He is afraid that adding a fourth member could disrupt the good chemistry they have. “If it is not fun, why bother?”

The band has a big show for a good cause coming up soon. Inspired by “Blood Scouts of America,” a song on their new album, All the Hellbound is putting together a benefit show for Cascade Regional Blood Services. It will take place from noon to 10 p.m. on Nov. 7 at Destination Harley-Davidson in Fife.

Why a blood drive?

“Metal bands don’t do enough for the community, except for playing an occasional food drive,” Chiarolla said. “I wanted something where people actually give something important.”

That would be blood, of course. Chiarolla said every time someone donates blood, it has the potential to save three lives.

“Blood is something everyone has,” Stotz commented.

“This is more than just going to the store and buying a 30-cent can of chili to take to the food drive show,” Chiarolla said.

There are eight other bands lined up for the show. Kashmir is a Led Zeppelin tribute band, Soul Stripper is an AC/DC tribute band, and Stevie Rayguns pays homage to Stevie Ray Vaughn. The others are local metal outfits - Tut, Unhailoed, Helles, Morbidism and American Wrecking Company.

Each band is required to have at least one member donate blood at the event, to set a good example for the audience. “I want to see everybody in all the bands with a bandage on their arm,” Stotz declared.

Any money raised at the event will go to help local blood drive efforts.

The band did a video for “Lose Yourself,” which has gotten many hits on YouTube. They would like to do another video, with a larger budget and better production quality.

Their shows so far have been in the Puget Sound region. They would like to venture farther away, but Stotz noted they all have full-time jobs, which makes touring problematic.

All The Hellbound plays Benders in Renton at 8 p.m. on Oct. 3.
