Have your book and eat it too at the Edible Books Festival

Normally, to "cook the books" is a bad thing, but not this April Fools' Day when University of Puget Sound's (UPS) Collins Memorial Library celebrates the marriage of reading and eating at the library's fourth annual Edible Books Festival.

The community is invited to participate in this fun event by creating a book-themed, edible display inspired by a favorite volume of literature.

Held around the world every April 1 for the past decade, the Edible Books Festival invites bibliophiles, culinary artists and art lovers to sit at the same table and "dine" on the words and images that make beloved books come to life. There are few restrictions on creating an edible book - the only rules are that the creation be made of all-edible materials and be inspired by a book. Awards will be given out in five categories: Most Humorous, Most Creative, Most Literary, People's Choice and Best Student Entry.

Library Director Jane Carlin won the award for Most Literary last year with her creation "Rabbit(s) Run," inspired by John Updike's "Rabbit, Run." She lined up marshmallow rabbit "peeps" in single file upon rice cakes. Head of circulation Cassandra Palmore took home the People's Choice award last year for her "Sundaes at Tiffany's" artwork, a play on James Patterson's "Sunday's at Tiffany's." She made petit sundaes and placed them next to a Tiffany's box wrapped in aquamarine fondant and topped with a white fondant ribbon, just like the classic Tiffany's box.

"It's really fun," Carlin said. "What started as a single event has in 10 years become an international phenomenon. Last year, we had close to 30 entries. Anybody can enter. It's a perfect way to play with your words and eat them, too."

Collins Memorial Library's Edible Books Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drop-off entries between 8-11 a.m. The public is encouraged to stop by anytime until 3:30 p.m. and cast a vote for the People's Choice award. The awards ceremony is from 3:30-4 p.m., and light refreshments will be served.

Entries will be judged by a panel consisting of Eve Vodden-Thornton, registered dietician/UPS Dining Services; Barbara Racine, UPS Bookstore manager; and Barbara Warren, UPS professor of Exercise Science.
