Take some indie sounds, add a bit of folk and a dose of soul and you’ve got a magic combinationà la Gina Belliveau, the newest recording artist to hook up with local Maurice the Fish Records.
Despite her quite youthful appearance, Belliveau is beyond her years when it comes to creating music and lyrics. This is obvious on her first CD “Turning Over Stones,” for which she says her inspirations were forests and fireflies, birds and books, love and loss, as is the case with all of her music.
“‘Turning Over Stones’ is a line from a song that didn’t make it onto the album. To me, it’s about discovery, of self and of the world around you,” she said. “Songwriting has been a way for me to turn over stones.”
The CD contains melodies listeners won’t soon forget, along with Belliveau’s sweet and gentle voice that carries her music straight to the heart. She utilizes harmonies, a mixture of instruments and her own expert guitar playing to make for a variety of sounds and moods. This Baltimore transplant now calls Tacoma her home, and locals can find out more about her during her shows as she entertains audiences with her charming personality and funny observations on life.
On July 2 Belliveau will celebrate the release of “Turning Over Stones” with a shindig at the Mandolin Café (3923 S. 12th St.) from 6-10 p.m. Fellow singer/songwriters James Coates, Nick Sandy and Travis Barker will be the opening acts. “I’m so excited,” Belliveau said. “They’re all absolutely amazing musicians and songwriters – some of my favorites in Tacoma.”
Belliveau performs often at coffee shops and bars in Tacoma, Seattle and Olympia. To find her, visit www.reverbnation.com/ginabelliveau and www.facebook.com/ginabelliveaumusic.
