Fur Ball is back - with a twist

Tacoma’s premier fundraising event for local pets returns this year with a little twist from years past.

The black tie (encouraged) event will take place Oct. 1 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Tacoma Art Museum, instead of the usual location at Temple Theater.

The event will also put more of an emphasis on socializing, and kick the usual silent auction by giving guests the opportunity to “shop” for things they may usually purchase at discounted prices.

The direct-shopping component will have items, gift certificates for dining, entertainment and other unique experiences that can be directly purchased by guests, as well as goods from local wineries, 7 Seas Brewing and Blue Beard Coffee, which will be served to guests throughout the night as well.

Ninety-five percent of proceeds from the admission and sales at the event will go to benefit the Dugan Foundation’s partner shelters, individuals and organizations that are continually working to make Tacoma-Pierce County a no-kill community for pets that may otherwise be euthanized.

This includes spay and neuter clinics, no-kill shelters, rehabilitation efforts and foster organizations for hard-to-place animals.

During the event, guests can also donate directly to the Dugan Foundation’s efforts to construct a 5-acre off-leash dog park, which will be the first fully fenced dog park in Tacoma.

Since 2004, the Fur Ball has awarded more than $132,000 in funds proving more than 1,300 spay neuters, micro-chipping, veterinary services and more to pets in need.

“In the past five Fur Balls, the community has made great strides,” said Julie Dugan, vice president for the Dugan Foundation.
“We are about the whole community. We’re supporting shelters, rescues and individuals who are all doing great work to make the goal come true. We have made great strides, but we still have a long way to go.”

Guests to the Fur Ball can purchase tickets for $150 each, which includes valet parking at the museum, wine, beer and food.

Those wishing to step a little further into the lap of luxury can purchase one of the few remaining “Rat Packer” tickets for $250, which also includes early entry into the Fur Ball, docent led gallery tour of Dale Chihuly’s current exhibit, premier seating and cocktails.

Before and after the event, Fur Ball-ers can enjoy even more perks by taking advantage of special pricing on spa services at Savi Day Spa to get fully glamorized for the elegant event in the spirit of the Rat Pack era with hair, make-up, a shoe-shine and more. Proceeds from spa services will also benefit the Fur Ball’s fundraising efforts.
Fur Ball guests can also make a night of it downtown at the Hotel Murano, which is offering special hotel package after the event.
