FILM FORWARD: Advancing Cultural Dialogue to take place Sept. 3–7

Tacoma has been selected for the first time ever by the Sundance Institute and the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities as a host city for FILM FORWARD: Advancing Cultural Dialogue. This film tour will take place Tuesday, Sept. 3 to Saturday, Sept. 7 and include free public screenings of the following films: “Town of Runners,” “The Light in Her Eyes,” “Chasing Ice,” “The Loving Story,” “Bones Brigade,” “Valley of Saints,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and “Under the Same Moon.” Moderated community discussions will take place after each screening. Highlights include:

· Those attending the free Grand Cinema screening on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. of “The Light in Her Eyes” will have an opportunity to take part in a moderated post-film discussion with Julia Meltzer, the film’s director.

· The Tacoma Runners – a group started in January 2010 that has since grown to more than 2,000 members and counting – has been invited along with the rest of the community to attend the free Grand Cinema screening of “Town of Runners” on Thursday, Sept. 5. The runners will meet at the Grand Cinema, complete their run and return for refreshments between 6:30 and 7:15 p.m. before the 7:30 p.m. screening, which will also include a moderated post-film discussion with Jerry Rothwell, the film’s director.

FILM FORWARD is a partnership of Sundance Institute and four U.S. federal cultural agencies: the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and The Institute of Museum and Library Services. It is a touring program that offers film screenings, workshops and discussions designed to foster dialogue and cross-cultural understanding.

Following FILM FORWARD’s visit to Washington, upcoming destinations include: Bosnia & Herzegovina (Sept. 19-25); and Maine (Sept. 30 - Oct. 4). Completed programs this year include California, Mexico, Colombia, China, Taiwan and Puerto Rico.
